Building a Passivhaus Garage with Oak and Larch
There's something quietly remarkable about the building that now stands at the edge of our plot. From the outside, it looks like something that has always been there — warm, unhurried timber, deep shadow lines, the kind of structure that feels entirely at home in the landscape. But behind that crafted facade is a building performing at a level most modern constructions never reach. This is the story of how we built a 3.6m × 8m garage using one of the oldest structural materials in Britain, guided by one of the most demanding energy standards in the world.
A Frame Built to Last Generations
The structural heart of the building is green oak — a material that craftsmen have trusted for over a thousand years. Oak framing is not a nostalgic gesture. It is a genuinely rational choice. Green oak is incredibly strong, it self-compresses and tightens as it seasons, and when properly maintained, it resists decay, movement, and biological attack for centuries. There are oak-framed barns still standing in the English countryside that predate the industrial revolution. Every exposed joint, post, and beam has been finished with Osmo UV Protection Oil — a microporous, plant-oil-based treatment that feeds the timber rather than sealing it. Unlike film-forming varnishes or paints, Osmo oil allows the oak to breathe, preventing the moisture trapping that leads to rot beneath the surface. The UV protection formula specifically guards against the bleaching and greying that sunlight causes over time, keeping the warm, honeyed character of fresh oak for years to come.
The Passivhaus Principle: Comfort Through Physics, Not Energy
The Passivhaus standard originated in Germany in the early 1990s and has since become the gold standard for low-energy construction worldwide. Its core idea is almost radical in its simplicity: rather than generating large amounts of heat or cooling and then fighting to keep it inside a leaky building, you build a structure so well-insulated and airtight that the energy it needs becomes almost negligible. The result is a building that stays genuinely comfortable all year round — not through a thermostat and a boiler, but through the physics of how it is built. For this garage, that meant applying Passivhaus thinking to every layer of the building envelope.
Rockwool Duoslab: The Thermal Core
At the heart of the wall build-up is Rockwool Duoslab — a dual-density stone wool insulation product that is particularly well suited to timber-framed and cavity wall construction. Stone wool insulation is made from volcanic rock and has exceptional thermal performance, but what makes Duoslab distinctive is its dual-layer design: a firmer outer face that holds its shape and supports cladding loads, combined with a softer inner layer that conforms to the structure and eliminates cold-bridge gaps. Stone wool also delivers two properties that many synthetic insulations cannot match: it is completely non-combustible, and it is highly vapour-permeable. That second point matters enormously in a timber building. Moisture must be able to migrate through the wall assembly without condensing inside it. By allowing vapour to pass through rather than trapping it, the Rockwool helps maintain the long-term health of the oak structure behind. The cavity within the wall build-up is not wasted space — it provides a critical thermal break and a drainage plane that keeps bulk moisture away from the insulation, further improving the long-term performance of the whole assembly.
Larch Cladding: A Living, Breathing Skin
The outer face of the building is clad in larch with a shadow gap detail — a modern cladding method where boards are fixed with a deliberate gap between each one, creating a pattern of deep horizontal lines that gives the elevation rhythm and depth. In sunlight, those shadows shift through the day, making the building feel alive in a way that flat-faced cladding never does. Larch is, like oak, a timber with an excellent track record in exposed applications. It is naturally resinous and dense, which gives it strong resistance to moisture and decay. But to ensure the cladding performs for decades rather than years, every board has been finished with Osmo Oil for Larch — a product formulated specifically for the tannin-rich, resinous nature of this species. The oil penetrates deep into the wood cells, nourishing and protecting without forming a brittle surface film that could crack and admit water.The combination of shadow gap detailing and open-jointed cladding also means the outer face can dry rapidly after rain, removing the standing moisture that would otherwise accelerate weathering. The building breathes. It sheds water. And it ages gracefully.
Cool in Summer, Warm in Winter
This is the question people ask most: does it actually work? In summer, the mass of the stone wool insulation and the thermal inertia of the oak frame absorb heat slowly, keeping the interior noticeably cooler than the outside air even on the hottest days. The shadow gap cladding creates ventilation behind the outer face, purging heat before it can conduct inward. The building does not need air conditioning. It simply doesn't warm up quickly.In winter, the same insulation layer becomes a thermal blanket. Heat that is generated inside — from tools, from a body working, from a small heater — is retained rather than lost. The airtight construction prevents the cold draughts and infiltration that make conventional garages feel permanently raw. A modest input of heat on a cold morning holds for hours. This is the Passivhaus promise: not heating the outdoors, not fighting physics, but working with it.
Old Craft, New Standards
What strikes us most about this building is how naturally the old and new sit together. Oak framing and stone wool insulation are not in tension — they are complementary. The timber breathes, the insulation protects, the oils preserve, and the cladding sheds. Every element is doing what it is best suited to do. There is a tendency to assume that traditional materials belong to an uninsulated, draughty past, and that modern performance requires modern aesthetics — rendered blockwork and aluminium windows. This garage suggests otherwise. With thoughtful detailing and the right products, it is entirely possible to build something that looks as though it grew from the landscape, and performs as though it was engineered for the future. Because it was.
